FORT COLLINS – The injury hits just keep on coming for an increasingly battered Colorado State football team with two of their main stars’ availability for Saturday’s game against Hawaii now in doubt.
Linebacker Shaquil Barrett, the team’s leading tackler, is questionable for Saturday’s game after suffering a left leg injury in on the last play of the team portion of practice on Tuesday. He did not practice today.
Barrett is arguably the Rams’ steadiest defender. He’s recorded 50 tackles and is second on the team in sacks with 3.5. He’s also one of the most versatile defenders where the Rams need it most – along a beat-up defensive line. Barrett has played defensive end as well as linebacker this season.
“It’s the heart and soul of what there is,” CSU coach Jim McElwain said. “You know what I love about him? He just goes about his business, he’s not a talker. He just plays the game; he likes to play the game.”
And then there’s tight end Crockett Gillmore, whose injury was not disclosed. He’s also questionable for the game.
“We’ll see game time,” McElwain said. “You’ll probably see them both out there for warm-ups. It’s one of the things we do in pre-game is test where guys are.”
Meanwhile, running back Chris Nwoke (ankle) is probable for Saturday’s game. Safety Austin Gray (concussion) is out of Saturday’s game and running back Donnell Alexander (ankle) is questionable.
